How to Clarify the PHPBB Backup and Version Upgrading Process

February 25th, 2012 1 comment

FAQ|Hostgator Coupon 2012A common question:

Ok, so I installed phpBB via cPanel from a paid web host. Unfortunately, it was already out of date when I installed it. The current version is 3.0.5, and I am at 3.0.1. Now, it LOOKS to be pretty straightforward. There is a “backup” and “restore” option, which seems to be self-explanatory.

Now, I am not that good with technical stuff, so let me just make sure I am doing this right. Ok, in my cpanel File Manager, I have all my phpBB stuff under a folder simply named “forums”. Like the directions say, upload the automated update package in in my root directory, the config.php file is in there, so I’m assuming when I upload it is just going to overwrite and replace the old files automatically. Ok, so then I go to the address of the install folder and do that. Again, stop me if it is not as simple as that.

So I suppose my question is, will I simply be able to use the “restore” feature to get my forum data back? I am basically unsure if it is still going to be compatible 4 versions (2 years) later. I checked the minimum requirements for SQL/php versions, etc and my account is up to date enough that there should be no problems because of that.

Also, is the automatic update package the best or should I upgrade .1 to .2 to .3 until I reach the newest version? Specific reasoning, please.

Aside from that, please let me know of any known problems, tricks to make things easier, or any other useful advice.

I have not installed any MODs.

learning How to Transfer a Domain to Another Domain Registrar in 6 Easy Steps

February 24th, 2012 1 comment

Answer|Hostgator Coupon 2012A common question:

Please tell me how to transfer domain from yahoo to another registrar. I used a hosting reseller’s service to register my domain with yahoo two years ago, however, I can’t manage my domain myself, for the reseller didn’t tell my domain cpanel username and password. The administration contact email of my domain wasn’t mine two years ago. Now the administration email has been updated with my own email, however, I can’t still manage my domain myself, because the reseller doesn’t tell the username and password. Since my site has been attacked for many times and it has been moved to new ips for many times, I am eager to manage it myself. BTW,does the email domain.tech@yahoo-inc.com still work? I need to contact yahoo staff about the domain transfer of my domain via email directly .Many thanks for your help.
Best regards

Expert’s Advise to Good Web Hosting

FAQ|Hostgator Coupon 2012A common question:

Every Top 10 Hosting Plans list I see is different. So those don’t offer much help.

Bluehost I’ve never heard of but keeps emerging as one of the best.

I’m currently using Godaddy which I REALLY DISLIKE. It’s tortuous. Everytime you buy a domain, you’re blasted with screens of more options to buy crap. I dislike godaddy hosting.

I have about 8 domains and a hosting package currently on Godaddy so if I switched I’d need to be able to transfer those.

I REALLY like yahoo’s search engine and answers! area, etc. But I am not sure about there webhosting.

I would need:

  • ecommerce (i’m going to be selling audio products, documents, and possibly video products from the site. So auto-downloading of a purchased product is a must (I know ejunkie offers that but that’s too small scale).
  • Site analytics! I MUST have site analytics!
  • domain transfer ease
  • quality cPanel installs
  • low cost

Bluehost was the top of this one list until I saw the reviews I posted below:

Bluehost looks like fail
Quoted from user reviews

Bye Bye Bluehost.

Customer for years… raised my rate without warning. Restricted number of emails I could send. Requested an increase and got the run around. Was told to write to someone in particular and they never wrote back or responded to any calls. POOR customer service so switched. Must be nice to be making enough $$ to not care about service anymore.

Swindle company .

NOT UNLIMITED.

I just received the mail from BLUEHOST.com >>> It has come to our attention that your site is using an excessive number of files stored on your BlueHost.Com account. From the review above, maybe i can’t Bluehost. Do you have any suggestion in mind – one that is reliable and cheap?

best web hosting with this conditions:?

January 12th, 2012 1 comment

A common query:

ok so i am using 0fees.net for a while now but they disappointed me with php (as i am starting to learn it) because mail script won’t work at all…
anyway,i am looking for a new web host, even better than 0fees.
i need it to be equal or better than these conditions:

* FREE (absolutely necessary…may accept somethings like posting on their forum a required number of times monthly or stuff like that…:))
* NO ADS (again, necessary,i mean websites look totally shit with preset ads)
* they let me put my own ads on my website
*disk space: more than 250mb (that’s what i had on 0fees)
*bandwidth:monthly…like let’s say more than 1gb
*up time:as much as possible…
*php: very important! everything enabled!!!version…latest would be better, like 5.xxxx
*mysql databases: more than 5, plus phpmyadmin
*file manager
*a cpanel would be nice
*upload method:mainly ftp,the more methods,the better
*e-mail addresses:i would use just a few but would like that type of address that any email address that finishes with your site address to be ok and received…(example: office@mysite.host.com and mail@mysite.host.com and mail_me@mysite.host.com would all receive emails in the same mail box, together and the email addresses wouldn’t need to be set, like you can send an email to an address like shitshitshit@mysite.host.com even if i have never used or enabled that email address name and the email would arrive in the same mailbox)… i know…too long story…:|
*addon domains:again,i would use just a few but the more the better
*parked domains:the same as above
*supported file formats:as many as possible: surely to use: htm, css, php and image formats
*would be better if they offer a fantastico type installer
*i can’t think of anything else right now…

so that would be it
the more they offer,the better!
i promise to vote as best answer the best hosting that offers the most of those conditions!!!
thanks to all in advance!!!

FAQ|Hostgator Coupon 2012

A frequently-asked question:

I am a newbie at web design, and working on building some small personal websites. I am building a site for a friend who already has an email account with 1&1 internet services. I am using a separate hosting service, and I am wondering if it is best to leave their email with 1&1 or move it when I redirect the domain. Is it usually better to have the email hosted at the same place as the website itself instead of through the domain registrar, or does this matter?
