A common question:
Ok, so I installed phpBB via cPanel from a paid web host. Unfortunately, it was already out of date when I installed it. The current version is 3.0.5, and I am at 3.0.1. Now, it LOOKS to be pretty straightforward. There is a “backup” and “restore” option, which seems to be self-explanatory.
Now, I am not that good with technical stuff, so let me just make sure I am doing this right. Ok, in my cpanel File Manager, I have all my phpBB stuff under a folder simply named “forums”. Like the directions say, upload the automated update package in in my root directory, the config.php file is in there, so I’m assuming when I upload it is just going to overwrite and replace the old files automatically. Ok, so then I go to the address of the install folder and do that. Again, stop me if it is not as simple as that.
So I suppose my question is, will I simply be able to use the “restore” feature to get my forum data back? I am basically unsure if it is still going to be compatible 4 versions (2 years) later. I checked the minimum requirements for SQL/php versions, etc and my account is up to date enough that there should be no problems because of that.
Also, is the automatic update package the best or should I upgrade .1 to .2 to .3 until I reach the newest version? Specific reasoning, please.
Aside from that, please let me know of any known problems, tricks to make things easier, or any other useful advice.
I have not installed any MODs.
