The Insider’s Secret in Getting the Best Web Host

February 28th, 2012 8 comments

FAQ|Hostgator Coupon 2012A common question:

Okay, I swear I checked out every hosting site and their reviews. However, I still can’t decide on which is the best. Every site has tons of good and bad things about it. Basically my main concern is having a great web designer. I could honestly care less about the CPanel, and SQL Server base and all. All, I want is a good site that’s around or less a month, and has a great web builder that supports custom HTML (for embedding objects and all) If it comes with a free domain on registration that’s a plus. Now out of these, which do you think is the best. Ipage, Justhost, Sitecube, or Bluehost.

I’m not creating a business site, I’m creating a video site, and I want eye popping graphics. (and a little flash would be good)

FAQ|Hostgator Coupon 2012

A common question:

Well I have been using free hosts forever and every where I go people always say that a paid host is better so I’m going to try and do it, I’m new at this but I guess its the same I need something with php, mysql, ftp access and a cpanel. I don’t know if that stuff always comes in the package but anyways I don’t have to much money so something cheap would be nice… maybe a free trial so I can know if thats what I like. How to Clarify the PHPBB Backup and Version Upgrading Process

February 25th, 2012 1 comment

FAQ|Hostgator Coupon 2012A common question:

Ok, so I installed phpBB via cPanel from a paid web host. Unfortunately, it was already out of date when I installed it. The current version is 3.0.5, and I am at 3.0.1. Now, it LOOKS to be pretty straightforward. There is a “backup” and “restore” option, which seems to be self-explanatory.

Now, I am not that good with technical stuff, so let me just make sure I am doing this right. Ok, in my cpanel File Manager, I have all my phpBB stuff under a folder simply named “forums”. Like the directions say, upload the automated update package in in my root directory, the config.php file is in there, so I’m assuming when I upload it is just going to overwrite and replace the old files automatically. Ok, so then I go to the address of the install folder and do that. Again, stop me if it is not as simple as that.

So I suppose my question is, will I simply be able to use the “restore” feature to get my forum data back? I am basically unsure if it is still going to be compatible 4 versions (2 years) later. I checked the minimum requirements for SQL/php versions, etc and my account is up to date enough that there should be no problems because of that.

Also, is the automatic update package the best or should I upgrade .1 to .2 to .3 until I reach the newest version? Specific reasoning, please.

Aside from that, please let me know of any known problems, tricks to make things easier, or any other useful advice.

I have not installed any MODs.

Need help teaching someone ?

February 21st, 2012 1 comment

A common question:

Ok, so I am designing a flash website for the local band director of my hometown band. I am creating it using Flash Professional 8, and have come along quite nicely.

The problem is figuring out a way for the band director to edit and upload the site easily, because this person doesn’t know anything about websites, domains, web hosting, etc. I have used dynamic text linked to an xml file, which allows you to edit text within the flash file simply by editing the xml file in notepad or other ascii editor.

What would be the best way to go about explaining to the band director how to edit, save, and upload the site..especially when she doesn’t know what an FTP program is, or a web server. Also, what is the easiest hosting provider to use when you do not know much about this stuff? It needs to be able to support flash and video…but needs to be as easy as drag and drop…like using web disk or something. I use unix based web hosting with cPanel…but what is the best choice to use for the band director’s situation.

Also, the band director doesn’t have a lot of time to set and learn this stuff…so I need to be able to explain in lamen terms so that the person will understand and be able to complete the task of editing the website.
